Police were called to a mountainside to deal with a suspicious homeless mentally ill man who was armed with two knives.  The officers spent hours talking to him and fired both stun guns and bean bags at him.  Eventually they fired six rounds at him and killed him.

The chief of police said the shooting was justified and the mayor called it horrific.  There are cries for an independent investigation of the incident.  The Federal Government is already investigating the police department for their use of force.

I think the Federal Government has no business investigating the police department.  Policing is a local government task and should be handled by local government.  If there is a problem with a local government then the county should handle the investigation.  If there is a problem with county sheriffs then the state should investigate.  Only if state police are corrupt should the Federal Government investigate; that's what the SGT Says.
