Sailor, Hero

Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo, a military policeman at Naval Station Norfolk was murdered while trying to protect his shipmates and his ship.  A civilian approached the ship and was confronted by security forces.  The civilian took a gun away from one of the security forces and Mary Mayo was shot and killed by the civilian, saving another sailor in the process.  The civilian was killed by security forces.

Police need to guard their own firearm at all times.  Even the most routine contact in a secure location can result in a shooting, as seen here.  Always try to stand with your firearm away from anyone you contact.  Keep your duty sidearm snapped in or your hand on it, preferably both.

Have a plan if you need to fight over your handgun.  I carry a back up gun and a knife.  I am confident that I can reach at least one of them in almost any struggle for my handgun.  Even a ball point pen from your shirt pocket can be used to stab a suspect in the eye while you fight over your pistol.  An attempt to obtain your duty gun is an attempt to murder you; that's what the SGT Says.
