Run Him Down

An armed suspect was walking down the street.  He had done a robbery and still had a gun and was threatening suicide.  Officers were blocking both ends of the street and civilians were starting to gather to see what was happening.

A dangerous situation was getting worse by the minute.  One officer responded with a plan.  As soon as he saw the suspect was clear, the officer accelerated his patrol car and ran over the suspect.  The suspect was hospitalized for a few days before being put in jail.

Ordinarily a patrol car should not be used as a deadly weapon.  There are times when thinking outside the normal mode of doing things can provide an innovative solution to a terrible problem.  If the suspect started shooting, officers the pubic and the suspect could have been killed.  If the officer ran over the suspect, the suspect is the only one likely to be seriously injured.  I think it was a good decision, this time; that's what the SGT Says.
