TV shows like COPS have been a great service to law enforcement and to our communities.  While I recognize the downside for agencies that had COPS follow them around, there was a good side for the rest of us.  Too much of law enforcement on television is unrealistic.

My late wife and my new wife would never believe the kinds of behavior I have described if not for their being able to see it on television. The average American never sees people screaming at the police, or banging their heads against the inside window of a police car.

They can't even consider that as real behavior, until they see it for the first time on television.  COPS does not have to show the dead bodies, and the other horrors we see as a regular part of work.  People need to know the type of dangers and stresses we deal with; that's what the SGT Says.
