Uniform Appearance

There has been a lot of discussion recently about police uniforms.  I like a traditional look to police uniforms.  Blue, tan or khaki, with a metal badge on the front.  I see no need for police to wear camouflage uniforms, even if they are a special team.  All black, or all green are also unnecessary, in my opinion.  Police need to look like police, we are not the military.

Police uniforms should be functional.  I think they should be fire resistant and our body armor should also function as a flotation device.  Every year a couple officers drown.  I am fine with exterior load bearing vests, but they should be made to appear more like a shirt, and less like a combat suit.  Wearing a metal badge on it would help with that and it should match the color of the uniform shirt.

A sharp looking uniform presents a professional appearance, gives pride to the wearer and sends a message of competence to the public.  We need to be instantly recognizable as police, even to foreigners and to children.  Sometimes we forget that, that's what the SGT Says.
